FOSS4G 2016: Mecca for Open Source Community

My Experience at FOSS4G 2016-BONN, Germany:

I would like to share my personal experience of FOSS4G 2016 annual conference held at Bonn Germany. It may be helpful to those who are unaware of FOSS4G conferences and also who are planning to attend the next conference. I am glad to be part of such a great event, thanks to the organizers and companies who made the event very successful.

A brief about FOSS4G :

FOSS4G is the annual global event of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo). Although widely recognized as the largest technical geospatial Open Source conference , FOSS4G is called as an “event” because it is far more than “just” a conference. A typical FOSS4G will include regular presentations and talks, but also code sprints, workshops, topic talks and ofcourse social events spanning all nine days. The conference focuses on Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial.

I am glad to represent India at a world class event such as FOSS4G to exchange ideas and knowledge in gis technology with the experts of open source gis stack. I hope we are the only Indian GIS company  present at  FOSS4G. Thanks to my director Mr. Sachin Agarwal for giving such a great opportunity to attend a world class event and get an exposure in GIS world. If any other Indian company was present at FOSS4G, Bonn please share your experiences as well on this forum.

My Discussion with Core Developers

Discussion with Andrea Aime, the core developer of GeoServer is very knowledgeable. The talks about CSS styling capabilities and security enhancements introduced in geoserver 2.10 is very informative.

The worth mentioning moment was the discussion with GeoNode development team. Its my pleasure to meet Jeffrey Johnson, the mastermind behind the development of geospatial content management system funded by World Bank. He shared his amazing journey with Geonode Developement using Open Source Stack and the kind of support offered by Gaints like World Bank which tells us the kind of impact Open Source GIS community is creating in the market.

There were so many such moments I enjoyed and felt proud to be part of Open Source GIS community. It was a great experience meeting GIS developer’s, entrepreneurs, startups, government officials, open source GIS users from all around the world. There were Malaysian land department officials , Estonia Government officials , startups from Switzerland & Japan sharing their experiences about Open Source GIS and how they have used it in their projects to solve the real world issues.

There were stalls organized by companies like ESRI, Boundless, GeoCAT, Carto showcasing their products and offering’s in GIS. Carto has launched a cloud based Location Intelligence Platform using open source stack like PostgreSQL, POSTGIS and Redis. For more details please refer to carto.

Overall it was a splendid experience to be part of FOSS4G and to attend such knowledgeable sessions on GIS based Mobile SDKs , OpenLayers, Geoserver and lot more stuff.

I request everyone whoever working in GIS domain to try attending this conference atleast once.
